This shows the percentage of classes in core academic subjects taught by classroom teachers who are teaching out of their
field of training as reported by the state. Core academic courses include English, math, science, foreign languages, social
sciences and arts.
While teachers without adequate training in their field may have industry or educational experience that contributes to the classroom, they may be unprepared for the challenges of classroom instruction. Furthermore, a high percentage of classes taught by out-of-field teachers may indicate that a school has difficulty attracting and retaining qualified teachers.
